Troopers from the Michigan State Police Calumet Post and five grocery stores in Baraga and Houghton counties will be working together to host “STUFF A BLUE GOOSE” Harvest Gathering charity events. The purpose is to raise hunger awareness and to provide food to local food pantries. Troopers will be at Larry’s Market in Baraga, Pat’s Foods in L’Anse, and Pat’s Foods in Calumet, to assist in the collection of donated food items and to answer questions regarding the food drive. MUNISING—Alger County Communities That Care (AC3), in partnership with Pictured Rocks Pizza, will host the 8th annual Pizza with a Purpose fundraiser with proceeds used to support suicide prevention in Alger County. The event will be held Thursday, Oct. 3, from noon until 8 p.m. and Friday, Oct. 4 from noon until 7 p.m. at the popular Munising pizzeria famous for its gourmet wood-fired pizza. Northern Michigan University will present the daring and provocative musical Cabaret Oct. 3-5 and 10-12. The play is set in a Berlin nightclub as the 1920s draw to a close. It explores the tumultuous life of the city’s natives and expatriates as Germany slowly yields to the emerging Third Reich. “It’s a really interesting musical—more dark and gritty than happy-go-lucky—but very fun to put on,” said director and choreographer Kristen Beth Ludwig. “It was a time of economic depression and the rise of fascism. Last year, Houghton’s Plaidurday celebration made a bold attempt to break a world record by gathering over 1,700 plaid-clad participants on the Houghton High School Football Field. The community rallied together in true UP spirit, proving that plaid isn’t just a pattern – in the Keweenaw, it’s a way of life! Building on that momentum, Plaidurday 2024 is expanding to include a new event that promises to keep the good times rolling.
