New Music in the Mine Returns to Quincy Mine Hoist House

On Wednesday, September 30 and Thursday, October 1, 2026

New Music in the Mine returns to the Quincy Mine Hoist House with 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. performances each night. This first Michigan Tech Music Series event of the season is an annual sell out show full of the best music you haven’t heard yet.

The 6 p.m. shows feature conScience: Michigan Tech Chamber Singers led by newly appointed conductor Jana Meckler, as well as solo performances by soprano Katheryn Summerset, cellist Adam Hall and Michael Maxwell on the modular synthesizer. The 8 p.m. shows feature this year’s special guests, the Michigan State University Electronic Music Workshop. This ensemble investigates the performance, creation, and study of experimental and improvised electronic and electroacoustic music. The group approaches music in new ways and considers its role within today’s evolving digital culture. The MSU Electronic Music Workshop will also be performing a song during the 6 p.m. performances.

The haunting acoustics and intimate atmosphere of the Quincy Mine Hoist House provide the perfect unique setting for a memorable night out. The experience is amplified by mood altering light projections provided by Michigan Tech’s Visual and Performing Arts Department. It should be noted this event celebrates pushing the boundaries of musical composition and caters to the adventurous listener. Each of these intimate concerts features New Music, a bold, contemporary genre on the cutting and creative edge of classical music.

Hard hats are required and provided, and close-toed shoes and warm clothing are recommended. Tickets are currently still available, but in the past this backstage event has sold out quickly, so those interested are encouraged to reserve their spot soon.
