Free Community Disaster Shelter Training

October 15 @ 10:00 am – 3:00 pm

The American Red Cross of Wisconsin and the Western Upper Peninsula Community Organizations Active in Disaster (WUPCOAD), are inviting residents, organizations, and community partners to attend a free community disaster shelter training on Thursday, Oct. 15, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. EDT at Right Start Up, located at the Hancock Community Hub, 417 Quincy St. in Hancock.

Led by experienced Red Cross disaster volunteers and local response partners, the training combines classroom instruction and hands-on learning to prepare participants to support their communities when disasters strike. Attendees will gain the skills and confidence needed to strengthen local disaster response by opening and operating shelters, supporting residents, and coordinating with community partners during emergencies.

Individuals, nonprofits, faith-based organizations, community organizations, schools, businesses and government partners are encouraged to attend. Lunch will be provided by the Copper Shores Community Health Foundation.

“No one organization can meet every need during a disaster,” said Kathryn Halvorsen, executive director for the American Red Cross Wisconsin North Central Chapter. “By bringing together volunteers, community groups, schools, businesses and government partners, we can create a stronger network of support for people affected by emergencies.”

The event is free, but registration is encouraged. To register, visit https://forms.gle/6BBeeGy5TPjkirTF7

To ensure no one faces an emergency alone, the Red Cross of Wisconsin is looking for volunteers in Northwest Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. While volunteers of all types are needed, the most critical need is for Disaster Action Team volunteers. Disaster Action Team volunteers are trained responders who offer immediate relief, shelter and compassion after home fires, floods and other local and national emergencies.
