About the Ahmeek Ice Rink and the Outdoor Recreation for All – Build the Boards Project Established in 1984, the Emil Aho Memorial Ice Rink, also known as the Ahmeek Ice Rink, has long been a cherished community space for winter recreation. Maintained by dedicated volunteers, the rink provides daily access for skating and hockey during winter and serves as a versatile venue for community events in the off-season.

Launched in Fall 2023 as a special project through the Keweenaw Community Foundation, the Outdoor Recreation for All – Build the Boards Project addressed the unsafe and deteriorating condition of the Ahmeek Ice Rink’s boards, which had suffered years of wear due to harsh Keweenaw winters. Thanks to the generosity of over 100 donors, including residents, businesses, and charitable foundations, the rink has been revitalized, ensuring its use for skating, hockey, and community activities for decades. This renovation reflects the community’s unwavering commitment to preserving and enhancing this vital recreational space.
