Breakwater FCU Financial Education Workshop
Breakwater Federal Credit Union is returning to Michigan Tech on Thursday, October 8, 2026, for the second workshop in an ongoing financial education series designed to help students feel more confident building their financial future.
The upcoming workshop, “Credit & Your Financial Future,” will focus on establishing credit, understanding the factors that affect credit reports and scores, and using credit responsibly to build a strong financial foundation. The goal is to help students understand how to build and maintain a strong credit history, which can play an important role in future financial decisions, from renting an apartment or purchasing a vehicle to eventually financing a home.
This series was developed in partnership with the Michigan Tech Muslim Students Association as a way to bring relevant financial education to international students and families who may be navigating the U.S. financial system for the first time. While the series was created with the needs of international students in mind, as we progress into more involved financial topics, the information can benefit students from all backgrounds. With our next workshop diving into the world of credit, we invite all Michigan Tech students to join us and take advantage of the resources and information provided.
“When it comes to building credit, it’s important to start early and understand how the decisions you make today can impact your future,” said Kayleigh White, Marketing & Community Relations Coordinator at Breakwater Federal Credit Union. “Whether we’re helping an international student who is new to the United States begin establishing credit or an undergraduate student who is just starting their credit journey, we want to give students the knowledge and tools they need to start building a strong credit history.”
This series kicked off in September with “Financial Life in the U.S.,” which served as an introductory workshop focused on common financial terms, different types of financial institutions and accounts, opening and managing an account, and using everyday financial tools such as debit cards, ATMs, and online and mobile banking.
“Credit & Your Financial Future” will be held Thursday, October 8 at 5 p.m. at Michigan Tech. The workshop is free and open to all Michigan Tech students. Students interested in attending can register at https://forms.gle/ugHYiYXc7FSdSh9o9.
Breakwater and the Michigan Tech Muslim Students Association plan to continue the series with additional financial education topics throughout the academic year, giving students opportunities to build their financial knowledge and ask questions in an approachable setting. Future topics will include budget techniques, financing major purchases, and avoiding common scams and fraud.
